New feature – Font Embedding

I know that some of you were waiting for this feature, and it's nearly there.

I am currently adding a few more lines of code and next release will integrate a new addFont method which whill take the font name, its style and the TrueType/OpenType font as a binary stream.

You will be able to embed any embedded font coming from your Flex/AIR application, or any existing font coming from the user disk.

You will then choose the embedded font through the existing setFont method and there you go ! :)

Find an online demo here.

Here is a snapshot of a PDF generated with AlivePDF 0.1.5 :

Yes you will be able to pass any .otf or .ttf file to the addFont method.

    Hope you like it !

    hi Thibault =)

um… you really rock (lol) and thanks for the AlivePDF project. you’re a phenomenal person for creating something like this and being so kind, open-minded and generous with support.

i’m more of a designer than a programmer, if anything, and i’m not too good at programming (but i try, haha)…

i’ve been working on a Flash CS3/AS3 project to create documents with embedded fonts, and I’m looking to furnish a PDF from an SWF so that the PDF is printable, scalable, and therefore high-quality. I’ve been following your progress with AlivePDF but it’s definitely possible i missed something. did you ever create a way to generate a PDF from an SWF?

i guess what i’m particularly looking for is a PDF generated from an SWF that has embedded fonts and is scalable (so i guess the PDF supports vector graphics). I created most of my flash application using AS3 in Flash CS3. Am I going about this the wrong way? Should I rebuild my app to be completely in Flex? Should I just sit tight for the 0.1.5 release that may support vectors and embedded typefaces?

your time and consideration is greatly appreciated
    you are a saint

    Hello Mr. Thibault Imbert.

First of all, thank you for the AlivePDF API!

I’m in the process of making a business card generator, and for that I’m using your product. But I’m having some problems with it, and I could really use your help on the subject. I would normally just post it in “Report Issues”, but I have a few attachements, to make my description of the issue more detailed.

If you want to help, please contact me on my e-mail, so I can send you my detailed example.

    Thank you.

    Best regards

This is great news. I have a quick question:

Do you have any tips for handling Kerning though with a custom embedded font? All the samples I’ve tried with my custom TTF fonts generate less than desirable output. Even the sample above at the top of the page has some serious kerning and readability issues.

    Hi matthew,

Can you send me by email the PDF you generated and the fonts you used so that I can see what goes wrong ?

Hey Theo, this looks awesome – I’ve been hangin out for this for a while.

I was originally running a browser based application that used Server2Go, purely because I needed a multi-platform application to build PDF’s. I’ve now ported my application as a straight up AIR app – it is way easier to install and use, and this is mostly possible because of AlivePDF.

Once fonts are in there, it will be fully feature compliant with old application. Any ETA on when we can expect 0.1.5?

Output from your example looks great! Can you post your source for this example. I was trying to replicate this with rel 1.4.7 but could not pass it the font details. Your description says it expects the font as a binary stream, but the addFont method only passes in a String for the font file, and I did not see anything in the method that used this for a pointer to initiate the streaming of a device font file. Thank you.

Is there any possiblity to get an early beta of 0.1.5?

We’re currently developing a flex app and need the feature of having the ability to embed our own fonts since otherwise this is a huge show stopper.

    Thanks for your help.

Any chance of getting a pre-release of the font embedding functionality before the 0.1.5 release? I have a ongoing project which would require the use of my clients official font, would be great if I could say to my client that it is possible.

btw. Will the font embedding support open type fonts also?
