Import EPS files in AlivePDF!

Here is an upcoming feature I added today to AlivePDF, which will allow you to use EPS assets (.ai or .eps) on pages. This is a very cool feature to embed vector content :)

A new method addEPSImage will be available which takes an EPS file and render it on the current page.

myPDF.addEPSImage ( new epsFile() as ByteArray, 5, 5 );

The first release will not handle everything, but complex artwork will be easily embeddable, here is an example of what I just generated (with an .ai file from Adobe Illustrator) with the forthcoming AlivePDF release ;)

Import existing PDF documents in AlivePDF!

A few days ago, I posted a little poll about adding templates support in AlivePDF, yesterday I was browsing the web and came across this post from Gonzalo Huerta-Canepa. Gonzalo ported the great FPDi libray, which allows you to import an existing PDF document and use it as a template, which is very interesting and a much request feature. Yesterday night, Gonzalo joined the AlivePDF team, his AlivePDF extension will be added in the official AlivePDF trunk, as usual the library is extending the core PDF class, which means that this will not impact the core PDF class therefore, this will not add extra size to the core PDF engine. So feel free to use it or not, no tight coupling here. I hope you guys are excited about this AlivePDF extension!

AlivePDF at Adobe Max ’09 – Session video

I just posted on my blog the session Michael and I did at Adobe Max '09 in Los Angeles.
It contains a section about AlivePDF and other cool stuff, hope you guys will like it.

LovelyCharts Interview

I created a new section called "Interviews" where I will post interviews about people using AlivePDF in their developments.
To celebrate the first interview, here is one from Jerome Cordiez, the author of LovelyCharts.

beginBitmapFill() added to AlivePDF!

Just a quick note, to tell you that while flying back from Adobe Max '09, I added the beginBitmapFill() (Drawing API) method in AlivePDF.

Code is very simple, just like the Flash Player native Drawing API :

// create the surface
var surface:BitmapData = new Star (0,0);
// begin filling with the bitmap
p.beginBitmapFill( surface );
// draw the shape, filled with bitmap
p.drawRoundRectComplex( new Rectangle ( 0, 0, 545, 770 ), 16, 16, 16, 16 );
// stop filling

You would get the following result :

You can also pass a Matrix object to apply bitmap transformations as the second parameter of the beginBitmapFill() method just like the native one.

Hope you'll like it ;)

Check the latest SVN update to try it.

AlivePDF at Adobe Max ’09

I just wanted to say thanks, to all the people who came to me at Adobe Max '09, your words about AlivePDF really gave me some energy to make it even better and bring it further.
During the session Michael Chaize and I gave (Deep Dive into 10 innovative Flash projects with Flash) I talked about AlivePDF as a solution to generate PDF's client-side ;)
I have to admit that the idea of adding templates in AlivePDF came right after this talk ;)

The video will be online soon, Michael and I talked about different stuff from runtime PDF creation, 3D PDF's inside Adobe AIR connected to a Wiimote, CPU emulation and more, here are a few pics from the AlivePDF section of the session. (Thanks to Justin MClean for the pics).

XML Templates for AlivePDF ?

Hey guys, AlivePDF is getting better and bigger, and I was wondering if you guys would like to have a feature like describing PDF documents through XML.
This would allow you to create XML templates to generate PDF's, this would make things really easy if you guys are managing a lot of PDF documents.

To get some feedbacks about this feature, just vote, so that I can get a better idea of your opinions :

What do you think about XML templates for AlivePDF ?

Yet Another Session Locator (YASL) using AlivePDF !

You are going to Adobe Max '09 and you want to book your sessions through a nice application (actually better than the official one) and see a very nice use of AlivePDF ?

Just get there :

PhilFlash did a great job doing it, and I really like to see AlivePDF in action ! ;)

Congrats Phil!

Spot Color support !

Recently, preilly85 asked about "spot colors" support in AlivePDF in the forum, which can be required when printing professional PDF's.
As this feature is easy to implement, I have just added it in the latest SVN revision of AlivePDF.

Here is a quick explanation of the API, preilly85, this one is for you :) :

// create the PDF
var p:PDF = new PDF();

// add a page

// create a SpotColor object with a name and specific CMYKColor
var sc:SpotColor = new SpotColor ("PANTONE 280 CV", new CMYKColor ( 90, 20, 30, 10 ) );

// pass it to the lineStyle, textStyle or beginFill methods
p.lineStyle( sc );

// draw the spot color
p.drawRect( new Rectangle ( 10, 10, 30, 30 ) );

This will give the following result :

And if you check your output preview in Acrobat, you'll get the following :

Linux bug fixed !

As most of you may know, AlivePDF was not working correctly on Linux due to a bug on the ByteArray.writeMultiByte method.

The latest version of AlivePDF from the SVN is containing a fix for Linux.

You Linux lovers should be able to use AlivePDF now without any problems ;)
